Dental Phobia.

Dental phobia usually occurs after bad experiences when visiting the dentist. However, due to modern numbing agents and sedation this phobia does not have to stop someone from seeing the dentist.

Many nervous patients, cannot even sit in the chair. By managing patients in a slow concise manner, perceptions can really change.

If this does not work, treatment under intra-venous sedation (twilight) is possible.

IV sedation consists of:

placing a sedative (midazolam) type drug into the back of the hand. This drug acts by reducing anxiety and giving a level of amnesia (approximately 45 minutes). In this time frame the dental procedure can be completed effectively. Hence the reason why it is often called ‘twilight sedation’.

After the procedure is completed and the patient is fit for discharge, a friend or family member will escort the patient home and for 24 hours afterwards rest is required before a normal routine is returned to.
