Who Makes a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
Dental implants work best when:
Your gums are healthy – implants need a strong, healthy foundation. If there’s gum disease, we’ll treat that first.
You’ve got enough bone to support them – if you’ve lost some bone, it’s not the end of the story. We can usually rebuild it with grafting or other techniques.
You’re in good general health – conditions like diabetes don’t rule you out, as long as they’re under control.
You’re a non-smoker (or willing to cut down/quit) – smoking can affect healing, but many patients use treatment as the motivation they needed to stop.
Who Might Find Implants Tricky?
There are a few cases where implants can be more difficult, such as:
Heavy smokers who don’t want to quit
Untreated gum disease
Severe bone loss (though grafting often helps)
Certain health issues that affect healing
But don’t let this put you off. We see plenty of patients who assumed implants weren’t for them — and left with a fixed smile they thought was impossible.
Can I Still Have Dental Implants if I’ve Been Told No Before?
Absolutely! This is something we hear a lot. Years ago, implants really weren’t suitable for as many people. But technology has moved on massively. With 3D scanning, digital planning, and advanced techniques, we can often find solutions where other dentists couldn’t.
So if you’ve been told “no” in the past, it’s worth asking again.
How Do I Know if Dental Implants Are Right for Me?
The only way to be certain is to come in for a consultation. We’ll:
Take a good look at your teeth and gums
Use digital scans to see your jawbone in detail
Talk you through every option available
By the end of the appointment, you’ll have a clear answer — and a plan that’s tailored to you.
